Why Negative Events in our Generation

Sicha of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Purim Kattan, 5746 (1986)

When the Talmud (Sotah 49a) discusses the period of the "footsteps of Moshiach," it tells us, that each day will see, worse occurrences, than the preceding days.

Why must we be foretold of the unpleasant events of the future?
__________

But the answer is, that Torah wants us to motivate ourselves, so that we should lessen the tragedies, and neutralize the suffering; by increasing holiness in the world. In this way, this knowledge will push one, to raise oneself to a loftier level, which would not have been possible previously. When a Jew sees the troubles of the world increasing -- it is a sign for him -- that he must likewise increase, in holiness. __________
Therefore, for those who say, "Isn’t enough, to do as much as I did last year?" The answer: "No, you are going against the intention of Torah."

For Torah wants us, to increase in the good of Torah and Mitzvahs; just as evil increases from day to day.
